Lewis E. Magsam, Jr.

Lewis E. Magsam, Jr., age 93 of Salem County and Ellenton, FL, passed away on April 20, 2018. He would have been 94 in three more weeks. Raised in Alloway, he was the son of the late Lewis E. Magsam, Sr. and Helen Press Magsam Smith. His stepfather was the late Howard Smith.

He was the beloved husband of the late Naomi A. Magsam for 70 years, and the loving father to Linda Dawson (Rulon “Buddy”) of Swedesboro, Richard Magsam (Mitzi) of Gretna, NE, and Lewis Magsam, III (deceased). He was a devoted grandfather to six grandchildren, Michael, Krista, Claudine, Erica, Alyssa, and Keira, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Audrey (Emmette) of SC and Doris of WA and former daughter-in-law, Ingrid of FL. He was predeceased by his siblings, Howard, Russell, and Shirley.

Lewis graduated from Woodstown High School. Following graduation, he served in World War II as a Corporal in the Army with the 84th Chemical Mortar Battalion 5th Army Company C. He was also trained in poisonous gas. He served a short time in North Africa but was involved throughout the invasion of Italy. He received a Purple Heart, three Major Battle ribbons, Good Conduct and an Honorable Discharge. He was extremely proud that he served his country.

After the Army, he was an apprentice plumber with George Hess for four years before working with Morant Hassler Plumbing & Heating in Salem for 35 years until his retirement. Lewis also served as V.P. when Hassler’s became a corporation.

After selling the family home that he built in Quinton Township, Lewis and Naomi spent retirement in an RV for a couple of years, traveling the States before settling in Ellenton, FL for 20 years and returning to NJ in 2011.

Lewis enjoyed singing and playing his harmonicas and organ, bowling, vegetable gardening, and fishing in Fortescue, NJ.
