David M. Hunsberger

David Martin Hunsberger of Friends Village, Woodstown, NJ, went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2017, at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family.

David was raised on a farm near Phoenixville, PA, the son of Abram Jones Hunsberger and Elizabeth Histand Hunsberger. After graduating from Phoenixville High School and business school, he began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Philadelphia, PA.

Then, as a member of the greatest generation, he served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1946. He was in the 84th Infantry Division, known as The Railsplitters, fighting in the European Theater. Upon returning to the railroad, he met the love of his life, Sara Kindle whom he married in 1948. They made their home in Glassboro, NJ, for the next 57 years prior to relocating to a Friends Village apartment in 2005.

David worked for the railroad for 42 years. When he retired in 1982, he gave Sara a wonderful gift. David retired first, so he had her dinner hot and ready on the table when she got home from work in gratitude for the many years she had done this for him.

David and Sara traveled extensively in retirement visiting family and seeing many US historical sites and natural attractions. He also explored his Hunsberger roots on a trip to Switzerland.

David walked with Jesus as an active member of the Glassboro United Methodist Church. He was part of the United Methodist Men and chaired many church committees. He was also a lay speaker frequently preaching in Glassboro and other nearby churches.

David was active in his community selling Christmas trees and filling in for Santa as a member of the Y’s Men. David was also a CONTACT volunteer spending many overnights at the phone center aiding callers.

David stayed sharp reading his Bible and scores of other books each year and completing word puzzles. He often completed these activities while riding his stationary bicycle. He continued his reading and riding until just before he passed away.

David was predeceased by his wife Sara, his parents, and his brother Norman Willis Hunsberger. He is survived by his son David M. Hunsberger, Jr. (Donna) of Mays Landing, NJ, daughter Susan H. Johnson (Robert) of Houston, TX, four grandchildren Michelle Jernigan (Zack), Matthew Hunsberger (Gina), Lauren Hanson (Reed), and Eric Johnson (Ellie), along with great-granddaughters Ella Hanson and Claire Jernigan. David is also survived by his brothers Franklin Hunsberger of Knoxville, TN, and Walter Hunsberger of Collegeville, PA.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church located at 61 Academy Street in Glassboro, NJ.
