William R. Piel

William “Pop” Piel, age 91 of Pilesgrove, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. Born in Center Square, he was the son of the late Joseph & Katherine (Mortz) Piel. Mr. Piel was a 1944 graduate of Swedesboro High School, and he was a US Navy veteran of WWII, serving on a PT boat in the Asiatic Pacific Ocean. He worked as an instrument mechanic at DuPont in Carneys Point, NJ and the Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE for over 36 years, retiring in 1984.

Mr. Piel was the youngest of 9 siblings and grew up on their family farm in Center Square. He had many hobbies including collecting vintage radios and toys and loved his antique cars. He was quite a TV, radio, and bicycle repairman, and was well known as the “Bike Man” in our local counties. He also enjoyed searching yard sales and Cowtown for his favorite collectibles. He was well loved by all including his caregivers, who helped him to enjoy a quality of life over the past few years.

Mr. Piel is survived by his daughter Denise (Alfred) Nicolosi of West Deptford, NJ; his son Spencer (Susan) Piel of Marble Falls, TX; his son-in-law Myrle (Dolores) Patrick of Alloway Township, NJ; his 8 grandchildren; and his 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Lois (nee Snyder), his daughter Michelle Patrick, and his siblings Mary, Harry, Betty, Joseph, John, Fred, George & Robert.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, May 15th from 6:00-8:00pm and Tuesday, May 16th from 9:00-10:00am at H.T. Layton Funeral Home, 102 S. Main St., Woodstown, NJ 08098. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 16th at 10:30am at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 149 S. Main St, Woodstown, NJ 08098. Burial to follow at Olivet Cemetery in Pittsgrove, NJ 08318. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, 149 S. Main St, Woodstown, NJ 08098.
