Emily Elizabeth Guth

Emily Elizabeth (Rathbone) Guth, age 97, of Carney’s Point, NJ died on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County. She was the wife of Allen B. Guth who died in 2002 and with whom she shared 63 years of marriage.

Born in North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Rufus Wayne Rathbone and Mary Lou Ada (Green) Rathbone. Emily moved to NJ with her family at age 2 and resided there for the remainder of her life. She was a graduate of Woodstown High School and spent many years as manager of food services at Mannington Township School. In her younger years she was very active in 4-H leadership and taught many classes on food preparation and preservation for the Salem County Extension Service. Emily was also a long time member of the Mannington Township Fire Company Auxiliary, and she had been very active in the Senior Circle at Salem Hospital.

Emily enjoyed sharing her cooking skills and, with Allen, was known for her exceptional vegetable and flower gardens. She was also an excellent seamstress, amateur artist and crafts person.

In addition to her parents and loving husband, Emily was predeceased by her brother Mick Rathbone, sisters Barbara Wright and Reva Guth and devoted companion of 8 years, William Peterson.

She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Baner (John) of Pennsville, NJ, and Dorothy Hadley (Joseph) of Elkton MD, four grandchildren, Hal Baner (Colleen), Susan Hadley, Michael Hadley (Cheri), and Joanna Hadley-Evans (Brian) and five great grandchildren. Sister, Grace Cassaday of Carney’s Point, brother Lloyd (Don) Rathbone of Elmer, sister-in-law, Helen Rathbone of Woodstown, and brother-in-law Edwin Wright of Bridgeton also survive Emily.

You are invited to visit with Emily’s family and friends from 10 to 11 AM on Monday, December 11th at the H. T. Layton Funeral Home, 102 South Main St, Woodstown, NJ. A service will follow at 11 AM Interment will be in the Salem County Veteran’s Cemetery in Pilesgrove, NJ.
