Earle LaMond Walker

Earle LaMond Walker of Woodstown, NJ, age 97, died Sunday, November 19, 2017. Born in Harrisonville, NJ on August 22, 1920 he was the son of the late Earle Lloyd Walker and Edna (Cheeseman) Walker. He became a life-long resident of Woodstown and was a graduate and President of the Woodstown High School class of 1938 and also played in the school’s first band. In the evenings as a young boy he would meet the 7 o’clock train and deliver papers that were printed after the stock market closed. At the age of 12, he became a grocery store clerk.

After graduation, he was hired to work in the First National Bank until WWII. During the war, he served in the U.S. Navy, assigned to VPB Squadron in the Panama Canal Zone.When the war was over, he returned to work at the Woodstown National Bank. Then he worked at the Swedesboro Trust Company before returning to work once again at the Woodstown National Bank. He completed 41 years in banking and never missed a day of work.

Earle helped to organize the WHS Alumni Association, served on the Board of Education, the Woodstown Borough Council, Welfare Board and several other community organizations including the Salem Office on Aging, Contact, American Cancer Society, Rotary Club, A.D. Snelbaker Home Board of Trustees, and was a faithful blood donor until the age of 88.

As a Life Member of the American Legion Post #237 since 1946, he served as a past Post Commander, Finance Officer, and member of the Firing Squad. He also served as an Auditor and Life Member of the VFW.

In 1953 he became a member of the Woodstown Masonic Lodge #138 and served as the Master in 1960 and Treasurer from 1961 until 2008. He was a member of the Salem County Shrine Club, and an Officer of the Swedesboro Chapter #115 Order of the Eastern Star.

As a member of the Asbury Methodist Church since 1921, he has had the opportunity to teach, sing in the choir, serve on several committees, serve as Treasurer, member of the Administrative Board, Trustee and was proud to become the oldest continuous member of the church.

Mr. Walker is survived by his children and spouses: Bill, (Sue), Bob, (Lorraine), Harry, (Barbara), and Diane Dorrell, (David); 11 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Walker was predeceased by his wife, Laura Dean (Lippincott) Walker; brothers: Harry, Emmerson, and Paul, and sisters: Marion, (Ahl), and Ivy.

A service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, November 24, 2017 at the Asbury Methodist Church, 149 S. Main St., Woodstown, with a visitation at 10:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be at the Friends Cemetery in Woodstown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Asbury Methodist Church, 149 S.
