David W. “Uncle Dave” Harris

David Wallace Harris passed away at his home on February 14, 2018 at the age of 91. His daughter Lora Ann was with him. The last survivor of 6 children of Roland and Mary Harris. He was a man that loved life and lived to the fullest on his terms. He would be the first to tell you that he had a good life with no regrets.

As a boy he loved working on farms and often reminisced of driving a team of horses to plow, rake hay, and harvest tomatoes.

After High School he joined the Navy and shipped out to China. He returned from the war and married his High School Sweetheart, Fannie Warren.

He retired from his job as a Lab Technician for DuPont Chambers Works at the age of 59.

He was a fixture in Alloway since the mid 1950s. He and his wife, Fannie, built the home of their dreams where he resided until his death. He made sure there was sufficient land for a large garden so he could continue his agrarian endeavours. He loved producing Lima Beans, tomatoes, and other vegetables which he proudly shared via his “Free Veggie Table” with the residents of Alloway.

His home, known as Poverty Hill was always the center of bustling activity with friends and family enjoying endless stories of Hunting, Fishing, and Bull Frogging. Traffic on Canal Street often came to a standstill on Friday afternoons when his closest friends, The Manhattan Club, gathered around him to drink, laugh, eat, and usually subject him to some good natured kidding.

He is survived by his daughter and son in law Lora Ann and John Hoffman of Fort Lauderdale, FL as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was predeceased in 1998 by his wife of 50 years, Fannie Harris and in 2016 by his Dearest friend and companion Barbara Remster.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Alloway Township Ambulance P.o. Box 123 Alloway, NJ 08001 or the charity of the donors choice.
